In the old format the champions always were able to defend their title. UEFA should never of left it down to a countries FA to choose, it is their competition and they should of been the ones forced to decide what happens.
Arguing that uefa left a back door rule in place then surely the spanish FA set a precident that should of been followed by all FA's just as case law is used in courts.
Also to say that everyone knew the rules at the start is crap, i never remember the FA saying at the start of the season that the top 4 teams would qualify whether an English team won it or not.
Of course the media made a complete and utter bollox of the whole situation, simply because it looked that Liverpool and Everton would be the teams in the shakeup for 4th-5th spot, i bet they would of loved it if the FA had of said Liverpool would get it if they won, the poo it would of caused the press would of fed off it like the bunch of arseholes they are. This is one of the reasons why it should be uefa's decision and not an FA's.

The argument i would make for Liverpool being given a place ahead of Everton is that Liverpool won 31-60 games whilst Everton won 22-44 games, effectively Liverpool had a better win % despite playing an extra 16 games in the season. If Liverpool had finished in say 10 points behind Everton or Everton had been consistently up there in the league for a few seasons then i would of said Everton would go in without a doubt.
