Congrats to SG & AlexDaughter delight for star Gerrard May 9 2006 By Greg O'Keeffe, Liverpool Echo STEVEN GERRARD today became a father...
This is a provisional squad isn't it? The thoughts behind the 4 strikers might be as follows....
Crouch - Really needs to be involved in entire build up seeing as he might be the main striker. Crouch might be plan B (depending on Rooney), and how can he work on plan B if Crouch isn't there?
Owen - If fit, he's first choice. As Sven has to name some sort of squad (which he can change later), Owen's name must be in there. He can then be swapped so long as medical evidence is provided that he's injured.
Rooney - Ditto
Walcott - Maybe involved if both the above are injured, so Sven wants a look at him just in case. Not played a competitive match since February, really un-Sven-like choice this one.
Defoe - There's isn't a thing Sven doesn't know about him. He's fit, lacking in match practice, but he knows what he's getting. He'll get a call up based on the injury situation, and barring Walcott playing like Pele in the month before the opening match.
Downing and Lennon - Some decisions to be made here, and they'll be involved in the Hungary & Jamacia games. If they aren't spectacular, he'll call up...
SWP - Same as Defoe really, but seeing as there isn't the smae question mark hanging over the Midfield as the Forward line, Sven may leave this one behind if Downing and Lennon perform. SWP has been on the bench most of the season and this may cost him unless the aforementioned play like pooe.
