"Liverpool have good reason to be optimistic about the future.

Their supporters certainly seem to think so. Ben'tez has taken time to settle on Merseyside and has, on occasion, borne the wrath of one of the countryÕs most demanding audiences, but before and after the match on Sunday, the feeling remained that Liverpool fans are warming to the Spaniard.

Most heartening for Ben'tez will have been the sight of hundreds of supporters parting in Westgate Street less than an hour before kick-off to allow three men carrying a giant framed portrait of the manager to pbutt. And here was everyone thinking JosZ Mourinho was the Messiah.

The aftermath
After many a hour reflecting on the game yesterday (no not Newcastle v Bolton) it seems that my summary would be an echo of...

The former Valencia manager was quick to praise the clubÕs followers afterwards and while all the talk centred on ChelseaÕs love affair with Mourinho, and the possibility of the Portuguese tying himself to the West London club for another ten years, a beautiful relationship could also be blossoming farther north. "Liverpool fans broke the record for the worldÕs loudest fans yesterday when Cardiff City Council measured a maximum of 130.7 decibels coming from the fans in Red yesterday at the Millennium Stadium.

Despite losing the Carling Cup final to Chelsea, Liverpool fans didnÕt stop chanting and official readings meant they beat the Denver Broncos fans record set in October 2000 which measured 128.74 decibels.

Throughout the afternoon officials took readings in decibels of how loud each sets of fans were chanting. The chanting of Steven GerrardÕs name made the loudest roar for any single player whilst the record was broken when John Arne Riise scored LiverpoolÕs first minute goal.

Sam Ward, the Carling Cup sponsorship manager was pleased with the record being broken. He said, "The Carling Cup is all about the fans and what a performance from both sets of supporters. This year's competition has attracted more fans than any before and smashing the world record is a great way to top it off."
