Is there anyone in-around Liverpool who hasn't at least *heard* of Jamie Carragher?

lapsed-sb-5-o-all-fpart-1

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was last night granted the freedom of Sefton even though there were attempts to block the player from receiving the award.

More than half the council boycotted a special meeting to vote on the matter, saying the player was "undeserving" of such an award which would now be devalued. Conservative and Lib Dem councillors generally opposed the idea but Labour representatives were keen to see the player rewarded for his European success.

Labour leader councillor Dave Martin told councillors that Carragher deserved the award because he was an ideal figure for kids to look up to.

He said: "Every request for James to attend charity functions is carefully considered and, if available, he is renowned for his attendance. He plays it down so much."

Tory councillor Wendy Jones disagreed. She said: "I had never heard of him before this. To me, a Freeman has to be somebody of some standing, who has done a great deal within the community, and is deserving of the honour."

The Lib-Dems backed her up. Lib-Dem Councillor Jack Colbert said: "It undervalues the freedom of the borough."

Following the meeting, new mayor councillor John Walker said: "Jamie Carragher is a real credit to the whole of the borough. He was born and educated in Sefton and still lives within the borough and has never forgotten his roots.

"He always makes time for others and is always willing to help out young people, and it gives me great pleasure to see this honour bestowed on such a fine young man."

36 councillors snubbed the meeting. Bunch of tossers.
