Spartak force United to compromise over Vidic

Daniel Taylor and Dominic Fifield Thursday December 22, 2005 The Guardian

Manchester United are still hoping to sign the Serbia-Montenegro international defender Nemanja Vidic despite being unable to agree a fee for the player with Spartak Moscow.

Spartak's president Sergey Shavlo visited England earlier this week for the first face-to-face negotiations about Vidic's proposed transfer. Spartak initially quoted a fee of £11m but United's valuation is significantly lower, maybe even half that amount. The deal hinges on the two clubs reaching a compromise.

"There is no done deal yet but we will continue to work with Manchester United," Shavlo told the Soviet Sport newspaper. "At the moment they are still the favourite to sign Nemanja."

Vidic, a member of Serbia's "fabulous four" defence that conceded only one goal in the World Cup qualifiers, has made it clear he wants to move to Old Trafford. "Since I was told that they were interested in signing me I have watched several tapes of their games," said the 24-year-old. "They do have problems in defence, to say the least. And the most problematic area is their centre-back zone, from where their opponents score much too often."
