We face testing times - Benitez

Mar 14 2006

By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ says his players face a 'test of character' as they seek an upturn in results starting with Fulham tomorrow.

The Reds have won just three of their last nine Premiership games and are desperate for victory to consolidate third place.

Arsene Wenger tried to increase the pressure on the Reds following Sunday's game by claiming Arsenal will catch Liverpool.

But Benitez reminded his players the Champions League place is still in their own hands.

"It's normal for Arsene Wenger to say his team can catch us, because they are behind us," said Benitez.

"He wants to give confidence to his team. But if we continue winning, they can't catch up. It's our responsibility to keep winning our games.

"I know we didn't play well against Arsenal. That's clear and I accept that. We were a bit better in the second half, but we know the kind of football we want to see.

"We want to see players getting into wide areas, putting in lots of crosses and playing well. There were times on Sunday we played really bad.

"I've said to the players they now need to show their character. We showed some in the second half the other day, and now we need to do the same in the next games. We have nine Premiership games and the FA Cup.

"To change things, you must show the people on the pitch. It's no good talking, you must play well, score goals and win."

Xabi Alonso won't be involved against Fulham because referee Steve Bennett refused to reconsider his decision to show a second yellow card.

Benitez is furious with the official, who offered no explanation to Liverpool for the booking.

Television replays suggested Alonso slipped and the referee didn't see the incident.

Bennett booked Alonso without consulting his linesman, prompting Benitez to observe: "The referee must have been telepathic to know what happened."

The Liverpool boss added: "The referee didn't want to change his mind. Maybe I need to know what is a tackle.

"It is difficult for me, my English is not the best, and I don't understand what is a tackle.

"Sometimes you don't need to talk a lot about decisions like this, you can see the television. If you watch, it is very clear the referee was watching another part and couldn't see the incident.

"We cannot change his mind or regain the points we lose."
