My guess is that you are talking about one of two things: - The use of "it", referring to the neutral section, when you think I'm referring to the people in it and it should have been "they"; which is of course a valid use because using more than one pronoun is fine -- that's why we have more than one in the language; or, more likely - You have said that there were families, and I am to infer by your response that you mean that they could be Italian, which is probably true; but none of the people that died were children, so it seems the amount of families must have been very small, especially considering children would have been at the highest risk, and therefore most of the people in the section were Italian.
