No thinking person could, realistically, have expected more than we got under Sven simply because he never put a TEAM together. The optimism came from the potential and the quality of the players he had available. Under different direction they certainly could compete with Germany and France. The England side was made up of players who would have managers keen to sign at very large fees if they came onto the market. Terry, Ferdinand, Lennon, J Cole, Lampard, Robinson, Gerrard ,plus a few others in the squad , would be high on any managers shopping list because they have quality. The manager was not good enough to harness and use it. Comes as no surprise to me, but a terrible waste.
Does anyone think that if Gerrard had joined Chelsea when he was thinking about it (or Lampard to Pool) a decent club manager would have had any problems in making them the most formidable and dangerous pair of midfielders in the Prem? But it was beyond Sven because he has no concept of "team" and how best to play the men he has in the squad.
