A fantastic goal from Spanish right back Antonio Barragan gave Liverpool Reserves a deserved 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground on Sunday afternoon. Barragan found the back of the net after 73 minutes, with a stinging 20-yard drive that United keeper Luke Steele got a hand on the ball but couldn't keep it out.

United arrived in Wales as reserve league North champions but they were second best to Liverpool on the day as the Reds recorded a reserve double victory over United, following their 2-0 victory in Altrincham earlier this season.

Defensively Liverpool were excellent with Godwin Antwi and Miki Roque solid as always in the centre of defence while James Smith had a typical consistent and solid game at left back. Lee Peltier and Danny Guthrie were excellent in midfield as Liverpool controlled the game.

Liverpool Reserve team manager Paco Herrera made one change to the team that beat West Bromwich Albion 4-0 on Thursday night with Jack Hobbs returning in place of Ramon Calliste. Hobbs captained the team and Besian Idrizaj played up front as a target man.

The Reds started the game brightly and Paul Anderson went close after 10 minutes when he fired a blistering drive just over the bar.

Everything that was good about Liverpool from an attacking prospective was going through Danny Guthrie ho had a fine match playing in the hole just off striker Idrizaj, and he twice went close with fierce efforts after mazy dribbles through the heart of the United rearguard. The former United midfielder has enjoyed a very consistent season in the Reds second string.

Six minutes into the second half Godwin Antwi was so close to the opening goal when his looping header was palmed just over the bar by United keeper Luke Steele.

Five minutes later some good hold up play from Antwi set up a chance for Anderson but unfortunately the 17-year-old winger scuffed his shot wide.

Just past the hour mark Herrera made his first change of the afternoon when Welsh Under-21 international Ramon Calliste replaced Idrizaj in attack.

Liverpool were still looking the most likely side to open the scoring and Calliste went close after 70 minutes with a curled effort that drifted wide after a superb pbutt from Guthrie.

The Reds made the breakthrough they deserved three minutes later when Barragan scored a fantastic goal from 20-yards out.

Calliste went close to making it 2-0 but was denied by a good save from Steele.

United came close to an equaliser in stoppage time when Markus Neumayr drilled a low free-kick just wide.

Liverpool Reserves: Martin, Barragan, Smith, Antwi, Roque, Hobbs, Anderson (Hammill 79), Peltier, Idrizaj (Calliste 60), Guthrie (Flynn 85), Foy. Subs not used: O'Donnell, Lancaster (GK).

Manchester United Reserves: Steele, Gray, Lee, Shawcross, Evans, Rose, Neumayr, Jones, Campbell, Hewson (Barnes 61), Mullen (Burns 78).
