suffice to say then that I was pleasantly surprised at his attitude towards the game and his take on the england perspective in general, i hope he has a great game, he's more than capable of it. I am referring to his interview that was shown on SSN yesterday, he even cracked the odd self deprecating joke, that no one had sent him ANY good luck messages, which is no real surprise for a miserable git like him. ;-) The way I see it there are 4 or 5 major sides captains out there facing portugal (terry-gerrard-neville-beckham etc) and if between them they cannot galvanize england into a force capable of beating portugal then there is something wrong.
we must win tomorrow at all (ish) costs. many of us claim to have little more than pbutting interest in the national sides fortunes and as one that sometimes claims this it should come as no surprise that i say i am more than happy to see them progress but can shrug off the defeats, competitions exits etc a whole lot quicker than following my team at club level. this probably equals out btw in terms of celebration (for those that didn't witness first hand the ale comsumed in may-june 2005 for eg).
as far as on pitch matters are concerned i'm not overly bothered how we play, who scores, who plays well, who doesn't, sven tactics, svens shagging, svens shagging, svens shagging and svens shagging. it's too late to get into all that now, we simply want and need a win. 1-0 will do.
all the criticism is BS as far as i am concernd, (go back to my posts of the first couple of games-winning is ALL that counts etc) imo beckham has delivered a few KO blows in this tournament, more power to him, gerrard, never the greatest england performer has done the same, i think the players are more or less beyond reproach, they will be in my eyes if they make the semi and the final. ( accusations of "easily pleased" may be forthcoming but i'll say again, just deliver the result i'll be more than happy).
Finally regarding our poor form i just want to add that imo it's just one of those things, was always likely to happen under sven but always likely with england since i've watched them. It's no shame to look out of sorts and still win, it could even be regarded with a certain amount of kudos, that's certainly an argument we've all read here over the years.
