Thats because it was a panda and worth only 100 quid. You would probably find a volvo would struggle against a 4x4. Its a Height issue. Watched a Program once about it. Could of been 5th gear. Basicaly they call it a "incompatibility problem", not that 2 cars hitting each other are compatible! Your high 4x4 Hits the car in a high posistion. Above bumper shall we say for this example? Above the bumper on a car is usually very weak. Whilst the same height on a 4x4 is one of the strongest points on the vehicle. same as if a 4x4 tbones a car. The height of which the bumper of your 4x4 would hit a car is well above sill height and in such a weak area of the car, hence being in a car and being t-boned by a 4x4 is possibly the worse crash scenario you could be in. Thats most possibly why the car was wrote off.

Just straying off the point a bit. A adult is more than likely to escape with less serious injuries if hit by a 4x4 though. The body takes the blow. When hit by a car it sort of folds you and thrusts your head into the bonnet. SO my tip of the day is.....
If you must get run over, make sure its a bus. More surface area to soften the blow ;)
