eh? the same teams are competing the semis and finals year in year out for extended periods, what part of lottery makes that fact so?

with statements like "The CL is a lottery". statements like - "Real Madrid failed for 27 years until fairly recently. It's rare that the best team in Europe actually wins it."

Norman randomyl selected from the cream of europes talent. look what happened to everton norm...

so..... The same real madrid that hold more European Cup wins than any other team? The same Real Madrid that have won, as the stats emphatically show, 3 of the last 12 or the same Juve that appeared in 4 of the last 12 finals, the same AC Milan that appeared in 4 of the last 12 finals? i don't think so. this says it all, 4 teams have appeared in over 50% of the last 12 finals. some lottery.

Lescor because of the pattern shown by those stats. which distinctly shows the same teams performing at a higher consistent level against...

on the contrary, clearly you read these NG's less than I thought.

nonsense for the CL,where bar the final there is more than one bite at the cherry. consistency is the key in any competition.

exactly, the better teams win it regularly, despite the odd giantkilling. manure who dominated the english game throughout much of the 90's make no less than 7 FA cup final appearances in 15 years, it could therefore be argued that the element of luck in the FA Cup is in fact less than the Uefa CL. Not quite so. it stands up to simple reason, which is the harder competition to win the FA Cup or the Champions League? Champions League, without doubt, EVERY time.

that's not the point here, the point, imo proven beyond doubt is that the cream, as you rightly point out, is always there or thereabouts, check out the CL semi final stats for further proof.

to argue the draw makes the competition a lottery is to argue that the EPL fixture list is tantamount to the same, you can not simply argue the draw makes the luck when a mere handful of teams are making the latter stages, of the CL OR the FA Cup year in year out or for that matter qualifying via the EPL for the 4 CL slots, consistently.

Dave mate, they scored with a deflected free kick and then did their best to kill the game. SAF saying he thought we were beaten when we were 1-0 down in injury...

Oh yes, there is an element of luck in football but the reality is that over the course of any competition, and for the longer it continues, the element of luck is continually reduced, otherwise there would be a Millwall in the FA Cup final every year. consistency becomes all.

It's either that teams win competition on merit or not, for those who wish to devalue achievement in the sport... they may as well not bother watching if luck is all you believe exists within.
