2003 Ridge Zin List Arrives I received my Spring Ridge Zin List package this week. The program is two mailings a year, one in Spring and one in the Fall to showcase the major Ridge zinfandel bottlings--three vineyards, two bottles each in each shipment. The Spring offering had the 2003 vintage from Lytton Springs, Ponzo Vineyards and Paso Robles. Ponzo is just SW of Healdsburg and a few miles S. of Lytton Springs. The accompanying note card said the region got 60 inches of rain and labeled it "slightly above normal"! Here's what the card said about the wine: "Nose: bright, sweet raspberry, tropical fruit, some floral notes, oak and black pepper spice, pine resin. Palate: elegant entry, lively, round, fairly soft. Ripe stone and tropical fruits, cranberry in finish. Quite sensous." So, with that as a tickler, a cork got pulled last night and here's what I said: Disappointing for a Ridge Zin. Nose is pale and hard to find. The pine reference manifested as somewhat herbal. Watery in the mouth with the “cranberry” dominant and being somewhat acidic not really very satisfying. I guess what 60 inches of rain translates to for me is a watery wine. Will report as the other two come up in rotation.
