Well, in the sort of circles in the UK where spaghetti and chips would be served. the "spaghetti" would be "spag bol" where the "bol" sauce would be a dreadful travesty of a true ragú bolognese, often made from canned mince, canned tomatoes and not much else. Truly dreadful. In such circles, therefore, the table would contain "ketchup" (nothing as grand as Heinz) "Brown sauce" and vinegar (malt, naturally) for the chips. As I would naturally avert my eyes from the embarrbutting spectacle, I have no idea what the poor benighted creature eating this tour de force of bad taste would dowse it with. However, I can confidently claim that it would be accompanied by several slices of thick cut "areated" bread slathered with the cheapest possible marge, and accompanied by a cup of Tea, made with milk and sweetened with between 10 and 20 spoonsfil of sugar. The liquid needed to be sweetened in this way, as it was usually so strong that ordinary spoons would dissolve instantly.

and in case any of you think I'm joking, I'm not. It's too sad a subject to joke over. And to think that the same country can have given rise to a restaurant elected "the best restaurant in the World"
