It's still accessible. With my reply:

1. If you really want to reach the North-American, not to mention intercontinental, audience of this net with your offer, phone numbers like "949-6397" won't cut the mustard.

Soon overshadowed by a fan of television "soap opera" dramas (idiom possibly a US or NA localism) who put a breathless account of the latest appalling plot twists from One Life to Live (which she abbreviated as "OLTL") on an unrelated, widely read newsgroup. Followed by her posting complaining about all the facetious ribbing email she got.

In those days there was strong consensus against off-topic postings, international posting of items for sale in Holmdel NJ, etc.

Pseudonyms were yet uncommon, disturbed out-of-control posters were very rare, and no one had heard of spam (or for many years after) -- if someone tried it they would have been located promptly and dealt with.
