Why no drinkable $1 to $2 wines in the US
Cwdjrx This is an important point. Historically, the closest thing to "vin de table" in the US was the "jug wine" segment of the market. Nowadays, serious wine drinkers mostly dismiss those wines, but prior...
Why no drinkable $1 to $2 wines in the US
Hi Dan, Hola Leo, I think there are three main reasons why good cheapos are hard to find here. 1) Property values are rising off the charts, especially in...

Wednesday Betsy came home with 2 lobsters, which were turned into delicious lobster rolls (no mayo, just the Vermont Butter and Cheese company demi-sel butter). Side was a nice fig-chevre-greens salad. I thought lobster called for elegance, but a roll called for simplicity. So I setted for the 2002 R & V Dauvissat Chablis AC. I like much more than the 2001 of this- clean pit fruit with minerally-stony finish. Excellent acidity- high, but balanced. Nice clean long finish. Great for AC level. B+-A- (note: we had Gerolsteiner water with dinner- tasting that next to the Chablis and pointing out the similarities could be a great way to show someone what's meant by "minerality")

Thursday was my night to cook, and there were a bunch of rolls leftover. So I dug in the freezer for some franks, made some cole slaw, and we hat a simple dinner of hot dogs, slaw, potato salad (store bought, sorry), and Crenshaw melon. We had some relishes and chutneys as toppings, and I served a 2002 Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern Erbacher Marcobrunn Riesling Kabinett (Rheingau). A bit heavy, with flavors of slightly overripe peaches and apples, as well as some mineral-graphite notes. I was hoping for something more sprightly. While I like (no, love) some Rheingaus, I think I'm safer in the Mosel. B-B- Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
