TN: 3 Winners when served correctly

Tuesday I arrived home about the time dinner was hitting the table. A veal ragu with mixed peppers over pappadelle, a dish that could go with either a bright white or a light red. I rushed downstairs, thinking lighter Chianti. But first thing I saw was 1999 Melini "La Selvanella" Chianti Clbuttico Riserva. Oh well, let's try. A mistake. Served at cellar temp (close to 50=B0) and without decanting, it showed nothing but tannin and a little oak. Some fruit tried to peek through, but wine didn't show well at all, and was way too big for the dish. Wednesday Betsy made corned beef and cabbage ((and carrots, potatoes, etc. - good but too clovey)because she wouldn't be home St Patrick's day, I served the leftover Pebreast Chapeau Riesling (ok match). Then I had to go back to my office to meet a group, and got home at 10 PM. Decided to try the CCR again. Wow, what an improvement proper serving temp and some air made. Luscious black cherry fruit, wild floral scents on the nose, the wood in the distant background. Delicous clbuttic CCR. B++

Wine Clubs
MikeD Hello Mike, I would be very wary of wine clubs. Firstly all the deals...

The next night I was home alone, just me with leftover corned beef and cabbage . Opened another Riesling, the 2003 Hexamer Meddersheimer Rheingrafenberg Spatlese. Flavors of Cheerwine=AE and peaches, with some citrus on the finish. Pretty sweet but with rather zippy acidity, nice wine at $15. B+

Friday I was solo again, and roasted some chicken with thyme. Once again, the 2001 Cap De Faugeres (Cotes de Castillon) proved itself a QPR winner. Rich dark fruit, scents of coffee and earth, long finish. Definitely modern, but open and raring to go. Tasty ripe Merlot. B+-A-

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency
