TN: Il Mimo redux, Cairnbrae, and a matching question

experiences know. Oh, the pile gets heavier! :-} I do strongly agree that more Napa tasting rooms post a sign for charges, than is true in Sonoma - across that rather...

Monday Betsy and I sat down for dinner on the patio - just the two of us, for the first time in about 4 weeks. Chicken-walnut salad and grilled Japanese eggplant. The wine was yet another bottle of the 2004 Cantalupo "Il Mimo " Rosato (Colline Novaresi). Ros=E9 with backbone and body, yet with a crisp acidity that keeps it lively. Rose petals over red strawberry fruit, a complex if not especially long finish. A winner at $11. B+

Tuesday Betsy made a really delicious dish- bluefish marinated in gin & lime (!!!) then broiled on a bad of scallions, plus gemelli with some tomatoes and herbs from garden, and a salad. I'm thinking a really crisp white, but the fact there are 3 open bottles in kitchen, and that I'm talking a group into city that night, mean I shouldn't open another bottle just for one glbutt. So I try have glbuttes of the Il Mimo (surprisingly ok with fish, good with pasta) and the Lazy Creek gewurz (well, interesting with the gin flavors). The bluefish is good enough I ask Betsy to make again (she discovered recipe while in NC last week, made it there with mackerel) . I'm thinking vinho verde or muscadet (lots of acidity for the rather oily fish, I'm guessing as to how things will go with the gin flavors)next time Betsy makes this dish- any other ideas?

Hunt, Sorry about yesterday's double post. I must have been over-caffienated. For decent inexpensive Washington Merlot, I like Columbia...

Wednesday we went to the park for a very good jazz concert by the river. Hot day, but a little breeze (and some shade) made it nice. Visited with friends, had some picnicky foods (asparagus in a vinaigrette, cheeses, a mushroom pate-mousse) as well as the rest of the Il Mimo, and a bottle of the 2004 Cairnbrae "Stones" Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough). Tropical fruit and flowers on the nose, the palate has plenty of grapefruit and gooseberry fruit. A bit of hot pepper and maybe a hint of minerals. Nice acidic, good wine for a picnic on a hot day. Best of the 2004 NZ SBs I've tried so far. B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency
