TN Wines with a German accent Hello; As the practical part of the lecture on the wines of Germany and Austria, 6 whites, tasted blind. 1 Very light color. n Shy, evasive, slightly perfumed, apples and a touch of florality, mebbe marhsmallows or bananas p Acidicity in the attack followed by a certain asperity. Obvious impression of high alcohol content. Overall impression: Except for the high alcohol, could have been a very young and anonymous Mosel riesling. In fact, it was Loibner Loibenberg Smaragd Trocken 2003 (Alzinger), pure Grüner Veltliner price c. SEK 175 2 Also very light n Unpleasant. SUlfur? Unclean. BAd shellfish, said one of the mates. Touch of oak. p Acidic attack, dry, a very slight fleeting spice (could be oak), a slight residual sweetness in the aftertaste, unripe bananas. OVerall impression: Definitely not a riesling. Definitely not something I like. Brindelmayer ALte Reben Kampthal 2002, also GV. PRice c SEK 225 3 Bit more color n THis is more like it. Peach, peach liqueur, pleasantly perfumed, intense, petroleum, flowers (bird cherry), honey, violets p Sweetness, petroleum, mildly acidic, good length, lighter than the nose might imply. Butter, almonds on the aftertaste. Overall impression: SOmething to contemplate the good things in life over. More meditation than food. I like it. Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese (Mosel) Dr Pauly Bergweiler Price c SEK 130 4 Oh boy, here we go again ... n hard to identify, fiery, apricots, perfumed (unpleasantly), honey p even worse. COnsider a cabbage head (white). Now, cut off the leaves, and find the sort of woody tap inside. Now, bite into that. Dig? There are minerals, and vegetables, high alcohol, a bitterness and a sort of gravelly dryness on the aftertaste Overall impression: Oh dear. THis is ... interesting. Juliusspital Würzburg Ipphöfer Julius Echterberg Silvaner Spätlese Trocken 2003. PRice c SEK 180 5 n beeswax, minerals (slate) spice, evolves a sniff of lilacs p very strong acidity, very much citrus, with elegance and length, ending on a buttery aftertaste. Overall impression: This took some getting used to, but it gained considerably. Rüdesheimer Berg SChlossberg Rheingau George Breuer Price c SEK 200 6 This one was fairly amber and obviously old. n a fading spicey note followed by notes of maturity, age, bread p very prominent acidity, w nuts and butter, very good length Overall impression: I thought this was a joker, perhaps a Chenin blanc. I was wrong.IT was ALSAce Riesling "Selection" 1966 from the Coop in RIbeauvillé. PRice (auction) c SEK 300 The tasting deteriorated into a discussion on what to drink with #5 with obviously screams for food. Cheers Nils Gustaf
